A recent article listed Portland Oregon as one of the 13 hottest American cities for 2016. Well known companies like Salesforce, eBay, and Airbnb have all recently established a presence in Portland adding to other startups like Tilde, Simple, and Sprintly.
Seems tech workers are fed up with the high prices of San Francisco and Silicon Valley. A recent study by Zumper found that a one bedroom apartment cost more in San Francisco than anywhere else in the country. People are simply being priced out of the market despite their upper level income. As shown in the graph below, one would need to make about $212,800 a year to afford a mortgage on a Silicon Valley home.
Portland is the most walking, biking, and public transit friendly city on the West Coast. Quality of life is a big motivator for tech-worker who are considering a move to Portland. They like the fact that you can walk or bike to work down beautiful tree lined streets. Plus, you simply just can’t beat Portland’s food, music, and cultural scene.
